Cash for Qualifications

Having spent the last 6 years studying part-time for my LLB (Hons), it really p*****s me off to discover that if you do a one year conversion course (GDL) with a certain provider and then sign up for their LPC, you will automatically be awarded an LLB on completion of LPC - no additional studies are required. The provider argues that the 'add-on' LLB isn't a qualifying law degree, so there's no harm done. My question is, if it isn't a qualifying law degree, what is the point of it? It looks to me like nothing more than a 'bribe' to entice students onto their expensive courses - cash for qualification me thinks.

I'm proud of my degree, I worked hard to get it and that is the way it should be. Some parts of my traditional LLB course I found interesting, some parts were tedious and complex and nothing short of a long, hard slog, hour upon hour of reading and note taking, waiting for that eureka moment, when the penny finally drops and that little bit of complicated case law is finally comprehended. Law is a difficult subject, law degrees should test the student's ability to understand complex legal theory. It is for this reason that I don't want LLB's to be dished out like sweeties at a kids birthday party.

I was thinking of doing LLM, but hey, I'm gonna hang on a bit, I've a heard on the grapevine that Tesco are going to be dishing them out for free if you buy £50 worth of groceries online before April 1st next year.

Rant over, the bar is calling me - The Five Bells to be precise.

Hiya Maid,

There always seems to be this tension between GDL and LLB; I personally cant quite see the point of laying out the extra pennies for a bunch of letters (though some might say this is what happens when you take either the LPC or the BVC, so theres no real difference), but dont let it grind ya down. As you say, you have worked hard and studied seriously BLOODY hard for well over 6 years, which is absolutely INCREDIBLE, so when it comes to sorting the Wheat ( you) from the Chaff ( those with puffed up letters the People Who Matter (Chambers and Firms of Solicitors) wont be fooled in the slightest - they have Bulls**t Detectors permanently set to DefCon 3!!!

PS; - How much is Toby the Barrister Bear charging you for appearing on your page?! ( his fees are KILLING me!!)

Re: barrister bear. He wanted 3 pots of honey, but I managed to negotiate a little and he finally settled for 2.

Barmaid, mines a pint please.

I did the GDL, and I can honestly say that it is nowhere near as difficult as the LLB, and a colleague and I even decided that we had done the Micky Mouse route to law. I thought I was working hard under difficult conditions until I met a group of LLB wannabe's and realised I was being spoon fed to pass the exams and no more.

Don't read my blog and the comments about the GDL in 28 days. It will only upset you. I can only hope that my primary school level law education that gets me to the same course as you doesn't create a void between us because we could be in the same group!

I am also doing the BVC over 2 years while earning a crust to hand straight across to the provider of the course, but how else could be grown ups do it!

If I can figure out how to link to you I will do so. I did manage it once, but have forgotten. Must be old age!

All the best

hello Swizz. My gripe isn't with the GDL qualification - I can see that for many people GDL is ideal, particularly for those wanting to specialise in one area of law that they may already be familiar with through work etc. (no point spending years studying areas of law that you'll never use). However, I do have a problem with an LLB being awarded as a freebie following completion of GDL and LPC.

Barmaid, and some crisps please.

I think in your position you should be annoyed with the GDL. Its a farce. I did it because it was the easy way to get in.

I guess the annoyance with the LPC-LLB combination won't mean so much to you once you have your BVC which is much more important.

I notice kids nowadays get 15 GCSE's at A* on a regular basis. And to think, I was once proud of my Grade 1 CSE woodwork!

By the way, I linked you. Thanks for doing the same. If only I could work out how to do the security thing I would be made.
